Featured as Chris Cravens moved to Bonham in 1999, and has a deep appreciation of his heritage as a native Texan. His artistic interests are in fine art, portraiture, oil painting and creating woodcut prints with a distinctive Texas flavor. The style of his work is realistic, but recently he has begun to adopt a looser post impressionistic style, utilizing thicker paint, bright pure color, and showing more brush work. Chris’ featured
oil painting; “Magnolia Trees and Honeybees”, recently took
second place at the Creative Arts Center’s annual Art Show and Contest.

CREATIVE ARTS CENTER BEGINS NEW GUINEA ART EXHIBIT
By Rozelle Fowler With its new Papua New Guinea art show beginning this week, the Fannin Foundation’s Creative Arts Center once again offers those in North Texas the opportunity to view rare and exotic art not easily found in this country. Papua Niugini, officially the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, is a country occupying the eastern half of the island of New Guinea, in the southwestern Pacific Ocean just off northeast Australia. It gained its independence from Australia in 1975. The country is mostly rural, with very few cities, and is one of the most unexplored nations in the South Pacific. “New Guinea art is world-famous, but most of it is housed in foreign museums,” said CAC exhibits chair Jack Bonds. “It’s very, very seldom displayed in the United States.” The exhibit, reminiscent of the aboriginal art of Africa, consists of intricately carved wooden totem poles, masks, story-boards, and even a full size native canoe. “This exhibit points out the Creative Arts Center’s objective of providing art for the Fannin area that cannot be seen anywhere close by,” said CAC director Karin White. “With our children’s art programs steadily growing, exhibits like this further expand their art education and open their eyes and minds to a broader base of creativity.” The exhibit continues until mid-June. The Creative Arts Center is located at 200 West 5th Street in Bonham, one block west of the courthouse square, and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For more information or to arrange a special group tour, call 903-640-2196.

Youth Art Contest Two local organizations who serve youth are teaming up to give young local artists a chance to shine. The Creative Arts Center and the Fannin County Children’s Center are now accepting entries for their youth art contests. The Creative Arts Center offers classes for young artists each week. Their annual contest gives their young artists as well as any child who wants to compete, a chance to show off their work. Cash prizes will be awarded to 1st through 3rd place winners for different age groups and mediums, including painting, sculpture, photography or pencil drawing. All entrants will get ribbons. The Children’s Center is seeking artwork for their upcoming annual fundraising campaign. They will be giving WalMart gift cards and special ribbons to two pieces which best illustrate the theme “Open Your Heart.” Artwork chosen for these awards will be reproduced on cards in order to raise funds to provide critical support services to children and youth who are recovering from abuse and neglect. All artwork must be turned in by March 31 to the Creative Arts Center at 200 W. 5th in Bonham. Organizers strongly encourage artwork be matted and framed. Assistance with art materials, matting and framing can be requested as needed at the Creative Arts Center. The opening reception for the “Celebrate the Child” exhibit will be on Saturday, April 12 from 1 to 3 pm. The exhibit of children’s artwork will remain on display through April 25th. The two winners of the “Open Your Heart” contest will also be recognized at Network Nites at the Fannin County Children’s Center on Thursday, April 17 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. Angels for Artists
You, Too, Can be an Angel!
By David Parks
A new partnership has been established between the Creative Arts Center, the Fannin County Children's Center, Fannin County Head Start, and Finley-Oates Elementary School. Karin White, the Director of the Arts Center, has announced that the generosity of local patrons of the arts now makes it possible for more of the children of Fannin County to learn about the world of art. Head Start programs nationwide serve children and families with low incomes. Often, these children do not have the same opportunities as some other children due to the everyday struggles of families who can just make ends meet. The Fannin County Children's Center offers several programs to assist children and youth who are recovering from abuse and neglect. The art and theater classes at the Creative Arts Center will give these young people a wonderful way to work through their trauma and to express their feelings. A new scholarship program will open the services of the Creative Arts Center to children who have the desire to learn more about the arts, regardless of family circumstances.
The first scholarship recipients have been selected for the Kids' Theater Arts Camp, which began on October 23, and for the Studio ARThouse fine arts classes, which meet every Wednesday. The students receive instruction from professional artists in a structured environment, using quality materials. One scholarship recipient at a time is selected by Head Start, one by Fannin County Children's Center, and one by Finley-Oates Elementary.
Head Start, Fannin County Children's Center, the Creative Arts Center, and Finley-Oates Elementary School are very excited about this partnership and the possibilities that it opens for the children of our county. If you are able to become one our Angels, providing funding for one or more scholarships for these excellent programs, please contact the Creative Arts Center at the number below.

These are hands-on classes and the participants will take their finished products home with them at the end of the day. In addition, Ms. Bosse's children's class in theater arts will be presented in the near future, dates TBA. This comprehensive course includes instruction in theatrical directions, diction and projection, building sets and props, blocking, and dramatic games. The end product is a performance by the students. Kimber Bosse's credentials are impressive. She has a lifelong interest in the arts; both her parents are artists. Her grandmother also an artist was a major influence in her life, taking her to museums and art exhibits at an early age. Currently, Ms. Bosse is a student at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Her double major is art and English. She finds creative writing classes especially enjoyable. She is a native of Odessa, Texas, and is excited that her jewelry creations will be exhibited in her hometown in November. She lives in Denison. Her work as an artist and art teacher allows her to be an at-home mom, which she thoroughly enjoys. Her "Texas Connection" runs even deeper than the present day: She had ancestors among the defenders of the Alamo. When asked, "What drives you?", Ms. Bosse answers, "Self-expression!" Her enthusiasm is evidenced by both her voice and her jewelry creations. Numerous pieces of her work are on display at the Creative Arts Center, 200 West 5th Street, Bonham. The artist invites you to see her work and to take part in her upcoming classes.
PRESS RELEASE: July 17, 2007 Fannin Community Foundation Celebrates 11th Anniversary By JACQUELINE WHITE The Fannin Community Foundation will celebrate 11 years of existence in August 2007, said Sue Smith, Treasurer. It was formed to administer the Family Life Center and grew to include the Creative Arts Center in 2001 and The Second Time Around thrift store in 2006. The Foundation is definitely here for the community, and were always looking for things that will benefit the community. That is one of the reasons why we chose to continue the Kool Summer Lunch Program. There are children that go hungry in the summer, when school is out and they no longer get fed breakfast and lunch at school, and thats not acceptable, she added. Anything that we can do that will eliminate that problem, and raise the level of interest in the community, we will do! The Kool Summer Lunch Program has brought the Bonham community together more that anything else I can think of! Its all the churches working together for the good of the community. Its been well received and supported. Fannin County Foundation Committee member, Heather Godbey, is our co-coordinator this year and shes doing an excellent job, commented Smith. We couldnt do it without the churches participation because its all done on donations. It costs between $12,000-$15,000 a summer to put on the program and that is just for the food, she added. We use the L.H. Rather Junior High cafeteria, to prepare the food. As a condition of our use of it, we have to have a paid school cafeteria worker there at all times, and it has worked out well. Originally the Foundation started out with 15 board members, added Smith, First United Methodist Church had the majority (9/6) as they built and supported the Family Life Center. Then when the administration of the Family Life Center was dropped a year ago, we went to an expanded all community board consisting of 25 members. The idea was to promote and expand knowledge of the Creative Arts Center and its programs to the community. Bob Self is Chairman of the Board, and he is using his extensive background in the arts to promote the Center. He believes that the Creative Art Center is a jewel to the Bonham Community and each communitys melding of the arts, culture and the socio-economic world fascinates him. The Creative Arts Center started with a donation of the building by Texoma Medical Center, on the condition that it would be used as an art center. We spent nearly nine months renovating the inside, with the help of Tommy Eskue, added Smith, and opened it in April 2001. Many excellent art shows and other special art exhibits have taken place since that time. We have an annual juried Adult Art Show and Youth Art Show. Individual artists work is also exhibited, plus community classes featuring photography, jewelry making, adult and childrens art lessons and quilting, to name a few. Lately the building is being used for Bridge groups, receptions, small parties and dinner clubs. All food has to be catered but with excellent kitchen facilities that is not a problem. We are trying to get the word out that the building is for the community to use and its rental fees are reasonable. The Creative Arts Center is not just for the elite...but for every member of the community, and for the expression of art of all kinds. Another side of the Creative Arts Center that is not known a lot about in the Fannin County Community is that it has many lovely, one-of-a-kind gifts for sale at reasonable prices. You have your choice of beautiful pottery, sculpture, jewelry, original art and other keepsake items that make special gifts. Whatever your financial circumstance, whatever your taste in art and gift items is, we are bound to have something that you would appreciate, said Smith. The childrens programming is wonderful, she added, and the teacher comes once a week from the Art House of McKinney. The classes are reasonably priced and the children have a lot of fun. Most of the fee charged for the classes goes to the teacher, with a small percentage going to the Center. The children who take part in the Kool after School Program came to the Center each Friday for art lessons last fall, and we have sponsored that program again for this year. The benefit to the community by having the Creative Arts Center is that there is a central place where the arts are being promoted. The center is open to anyone who wants to learn about art, and who want to learn how to express art. We not only have the childrens programming we have many adult art classes. Some past classes included silk screening, making small figures out of material, and Jack Bonds Treasure Chest class that taught us how to look at precious stones and jewelry and tell if its good, added Smith, and how Pawn shops frequently have the best jewelry buys. Operating the Creative Arts Center and its many community programs takes money and that is how The Second Time Around thrift shop came into existence. It is our money producer, said Smith. It operates across from the Bonham Post Office on Center Street. The Second Time Around is open Tuesday thru Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. We encourage the community to donate and shop at the store. Brooks Brothers donated all of the racks and fixtures that make it so professional looking, with the Livingston family donating the use of the restored building. Its a wonderful place to shop for a bargain with everything from furniture (our biggest money maker), adult and childrens clothing, dishes, books, videos, jewelry and even donated art works. Its a fascinating place to shop. You never know what people will donate and what you will find. Everything is reasonably priced, added Smith, and the best part is that all of the money that is spent in the store stays here in Bonham for the good of its citizens! The store operates with a paid manager, and a 30-hour a week employee. We are fortunate to have an Experience Works employee and are always looking for volunteers. A member of our board, Krista Stephenson takes the responsibility for overseeing the store and also loves decorating the stores windows. We have employed a professional grant writer who is in the process of analyzing the Foundation and making some recommendations to us. Shell be searching for grants that fit us. We also have a volunteer searching for grants. Right now we have a matching grant. Robert and Kay Carrel have given us a matching $100,000 grant, and we match it by donations. Anyone donating to the Kool Lunch Program or the Creative Arts Center will have their donation doubled with the grant. We had a big fundraiser to celebrate our five-year anniversary, earlier this year, and raffled off a Ford truck, a flat screen television, a diamond ring and a $1,000 gift certificate from Brooks Brothers. We did very well on it and will probably do it again this coming year, as it was very successful, added Smith. Karin White, Director of the Creative Arts Center, invites members of the community to stop by for a visit and see what is available. The Creative Arts Center is located at 200 West Fifth Street in Bonham, Texas 75418. The Center is open Tuesday thru Friday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. You can call (903) 640-2196 or E-mail: creativeartscenter@netexas.net for more information.
