Virginia Dehn was an American artist whose work was known for its interpretation of natural themes, many in abstract form. She exhibited in shows and galleries throughout the U.S. In conjunction with a gallery show of her work at the Creative Arts Center in Bonham, Texas, a book including ten of her works, along with responses to them in poetry, prose or music, will be published by Grayson Books in April, 2013. Cash prizes (1st-$100; 2nd-$75; 3rd-$50) will be awarded to the top 3 in each of 3 age-group categories (Child ages 6-12; Teens ages 13-19; and Adult). In addition, one child, one teen, and one adult will receive a “top honor” award of $100 from Grayson Books. The contest begins October 1, 2012 when the ten paintings by Virginia Dehn will be hung at the Creative Arts Center; the paintings may also be seen on the web site (CreativeArtsCenter.us). Contest rules and entry forms will be available in both places. All entries must be submitted to the Creative Arts Center by December 1, 2012 in order to be judged for publication. Entry fees (to help defray the cost of publication) are as follows: Children $2; Teens $5; and Adults $10 per entry.

Guidelines
• Go to the Creative Arts Center (200 W. 5th Street, Bonham, Texas) to see the ten works of art by the late artist Virginia Dehn or view them below or GraysonBooks.com. Choose one or more to respond to in writing or music.
• Submit your poem (no more than 40 lines), or short prose piece (no more than 400 words), or a recording of your musical composition.
• The deadline for submission is December 1, 2012.
• For each painting, several pieces of writing will be selected. These will be published in a book that contains the artwork and the writing. Writing by children, teens and adults will be included. Winners will receive a copy of the book. Musical entry winners will be honored on the opening night of the Virginia Dehn Show at the Creative Arts Center (April 12, 2013) and their musical recordings played at various times during the exhibit.
• The book will also be available for sale to the general public during the gallery show of Virginia Dehn’s work at the Creative Arts Center beginning April 12, 2013, through Grayson Books, the publisher.
• Three age groups may enter. Read and follow the guidelines carefully. Entries that fail to follow the guidelines will be disqualified.

Child Entry (ages 6-12) Cash prizes (1st-$100; 2nd-$75; 3rd-$50)

Children may enter no more than 2 pieces of writing, in prose or poetry, or a recording of a short musical composition. There is a $2 fee for entering the contest (to help defray the cost of publishing).
Children should keep a copy of their work, as no entries will be returned. Submit your work in person at the Creative Arts Center, 200 W. 5th Street, Bonham, Texas 75418 for the Dehn Contest or mail along with the entry fee to the same address, no later than December 1, 2012. On the top left hand corner of your piece put the following:

Winners will be announced on the web sites (CreativeArtsCenter.us and GraysonBooks.com) in January, 2013. Winners will receive a copy of the published book that will contain reproductions of the artwork and the winning pieces of writing. Winning musical entries will be played throughout the Virginia Dehn Show at the Creative Arts Center in April 2013.

Adults may enter as many poems or prose pieces or recordings of short musical compositions as they like, but each entry must be accompanied by a $10 reading fee (to help defray the cost of publishing). The check should be made out to Grayson Books.
